"A documentary series that explores the furthest reaches of the internet and the people who frequent it, Dark Net provides a revealing and cautionary look inside a vast cyber netherworld rarely witnessed by most of us. Dark Net is a documentary series that explores the impact of technology on love, sex, power, children, our memories, our senses, our identities, and even our physical selves."
Dark Net airs Thursday nights at 11 PM EST on Showtime. Tonight's episode will feature a few days in the lives of Black feminist writers Mikki Kendall and, today's chat guest, Jamie Nesbitt Golden! I got to chat a little with Jamie about her and Mikki's feature spot in "Dark Net", plus another near and dear project of hers.
FoxyJB: So! What is "Dark Net"? Is it a 2hr doc, or a limited series?
Jamie Nesbitt Golden: It's an 8-part docuseries; some of the episodes have been a little disturbing.
FoxyJB: With just you, or an ensemble of people?
Jamie Nesbitt Golden: More of an ensemble. Each episode spotlights three different people or groups.
FoxyJB: How did you get wind of this project? Did Showtime reach out to you and the other participants?
Jamie Nesbitt Golden: Yep. Got an email out the blue last August. They showed up about a couple weeks later with a camera crew, then shot me and Mikki (Kendall) over the course of four days.
FxJB: Was this your first time having your life documented? If so, how was the experience, being that you have a family?
Jamie: Yeah, first time. It was a little weird and surreal. These people are literally in your space for like, 8 hours a day, and my son is just running all over the place as they're trying to interview me. I don't see how people can live like that all the time. It would drive me nuts.
FxJB: So, besides Dark Net, what other projects do you have going on?
Jamie: I just got this grant for my journo ethics project. Basically, a partner and I are working to change the way journalists use social media for content, with an emphasis on treating story subjects with care. We're hoping something comes of it.
FxJB: In light of people being outed on internet news sites and tweeter's content being used without permission or pay, this feels like a worthwhile thing to do.
Episode 7 with Jamie Nesbitt Golden & Mikki Kendall airs tonight @ 11 on Showtime!

Chances are, if you've read any news site on the web, Jamie Nesbitt Golden has contributed to it. Jamie is also 1/5 of the blerd group Nerdgasm Noire, and 1/2 of "Hood Feminism" with her longtime friend and partner-in-crime, Mikki Kendall. You can follow Jamie on Twitter at @thewayoftheid.
