"Sailor Moon Crystal" & the Rebirth of My Inner Otaku

Updated: Jan 17

I, like everyone else, had heard the rumors of a new Sailor Moon anime in the works as early as late 2013. And then in 2014, it premiered! Sailor Moon Crystal is shown for free by Hulu and Crunchy Roll every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, and I AM LOVING IT!!!

Sailor Moon Crystal is based on and follows much more closely the original 18 part manga series by Naoko Takeuchi. Takeuchi even serves as producer of the show, if I remember correctly, and the artwork of the show even adapts Takeuchi’s art style much more than the original Sailor Moon series. Having read most of the original manga back in high school, I was SUPER DUPER stoked! I saw a preview of Crystal on YouTube, and after seeing the animation, my excitement lessened a little bit, but once I found the time to sit down and start watching, I. WAS. HOOKED.

I’ve been reading some criticisms about the Crystal series; some don’t like it because it’s being much more faithful to the manga, so there’s less cartoonish flair and slapstick comedy as there was in the 90s anime; there’s no rivalry between Usagi and Rei, for instance. The tone of the anime feels a bit more serious, as the manga is the same way; enemies aren’t redeemed in the manga as some were in the 90s anime, so if they’re evil as all hell and they die…they’re just DEAD. There’s also the issue of animation used in Crystal, and I agree that Toei could’ve spent more money to animate this new series better. I like the new animations for the Sailors’ transformations, but then, when it comes to when the Sailor Soldiers use their powers, I do long for the old days of separate animation sequences for each attack, instead of the somewhat lazier approach that’s done in Crystal.

I’ve also heard complaints about there being no Ann and Alan series arc; to that, I say….WELP! Crystal is following the manga more closely and the Ann+Alan arc was created solely for the original anime.

That said, I’m very happy with Sailor Moon Crystal thus far, and I’ve seen the trailer for the Chibiusa/Crystal Tokyo/BlackMoon+Wiseman story arc. I CAN’T WAIT!!!
