HashtagGate: #AllDemBlerdsAreMen, But #BlackGirlNerdsAreBrave

Editor's note: Upon checking Rodimus Prime's Twitter timeline, he made it clear in a pinned tweet that The Fiyastarters Podcast (FSP) created #DemThrones.

Last week, I bore witness to the worst examples of intraracial sexism and misogynoir within the Blerd community. I’m no stranger to dealing with misogynoir from my own Blerd brothers and Black men in general, but this recent brush with it has left a bittersweet taste in my mouth, to put it lightly.

Preface: I, like most blerds prior to last Wednesday, was under the impression that Jamie Broadnax, the HBIC (Head Blerd in Charge) of BlackGirlNerds, had created the hashtag #DemThrones, a popular hashtag that’s always trending on Twitter when Game of Thrones is on the air. Turns out, that Jamie only came to know of the hashtag & began to use it back in 2014 thanks to podcaster Rodimus Prime of “The Black Guy Who Tips”.

Now, an article recently put out by Sidney Fussell for Tech Insider wrongly attributed the creation of #DemThrones to Broadnax, which she rectified by tweeting Fussell and correcting him, saying that she did NOT start the hashtag.

The article would later get edited two more times, first attributing the hashtag to Rodimus Prime before correctly attributing the creation of #DemThrones to the Fiyastarters Podcast. Easy fix, right?

Apparently, NOT.

The host trio of the FiyaStarters Podcast aired their grievances with having their content creating efforts ignored on Episode 231 of their podcast last week. But instead of fully directing their anger at the right person---Sidney Fussell---they instead commented on the article being horrible while directing the full brunt of their rage at Jamie Broadnax, accusing her of biting off of them and knowingly taking the credit for content THEY created.

"So, this young lady, she's tweeting back and forth with people like Shonda Rhimes, taking credit for some shit she wasn't thinking about. That's frustrating for us."

"It's not her fault, but she is aware that that type of talking did not originate from her. She knows this, and she don't give a fuck." -quote from Episode 231

They asserted these things without evidence, on-air, and without anything so much as a tweet or a DM to Broadnax asking whether or not she had done such things, even going so far as to act as arbiters of Blackness via making comments about Jamie’s vernacular.

Because if you don’t speak like dis and laike dat, ‘n don’t tawlk laike dem, you can’t POSSIBLY be a real nigga or what have you, correct?

Yet the FSP had no flames for Rodimus, whom was the next person wrongly attributed for creating #DemThrones, but I guess as long as it’s a Black dude you’re COOL WITH who wrongly got the credit (for a moment, until he set the record straight in a pinned tweet on his timeline), it’s all good in the hood!

But this Black chick they didn’t know? AND WHO WAS TWEETED BY SHONDA RHIMES? “GETTING CREDIT” FOR SOMETHING Y’ALL CREATED YET COULDN’T GET TRENDING UNTIL BGN STARTED USING IT CUZ ONLY A DROP IN A BUCKET OF NIGGAS KNOW OF YOU AND YO PODCAST, OHHHHHHH HELL NAWL, NOW Y’ALL TIRED OF BEING USED AND SHIT, RIGHT?

That, along with seeing mostly Blerd men cape for FSP and not holding them accountable for how they came at Broadnax has opened the eyes of a number of people in the Blerd community, myself included. If we cannot hold those in our community---or those who WERE part of our community, because FSP don’t consider themselves “blerds”, except for when it’s convenient---accountable for misogynistic actions and behavior, there can be no unity among us. This drama is not only sexist, but petty in the worst way, because the damn hashtag has been in rotation for the longest time, and NOW….all a SUDDEN…when it’s getting the burn it was intended to get, THANKS TO FANS OF GAME OF THRONES, there’s a problem, and it’s all about “not getting credit for content”. I for one am HERE for creators getting credit and recognition for the content they bring to life, but this situation was NOT HANDLED IN THE RIGHT WAY. And there are those who would rather double down and make it about “getting credit” than look at what’s transpired and admit fault and wrongdoing. Hell, in one of the exchanges I had with an FSP fan, I was told that their actions cannot be sexist because FSP know and are hella cool with Rodmius Prime.

…..in WHAT WORLD does that make any COTTONPICKIN’ SENSE, SWAY?!!!

FSP didn’t know Sidney Fussell EITHER, but did HE get any ether for lazy journalism?

NOPE.

So, there’s no way ANY BLERD MAN can say what FSP did IS sexist and NOT look ashier than Ashy Larry, dawg. Seriously.

But not to be held down by drama that seems to have been started for visibility & jealousy over a Black Nerd Girl shinin’, Jamie Broadnax has now started using the hashtag #ThronesYall, created by Twitter user @glasnaut.

And it’s been trending since this past Saturday, thanks to the BGN community and the likes of, oh…awesome director Ava DuVernay and DMV activist DeRay!!

The Fiyastarters can keep #DemThrones, it’s outlived its glamour, anyway. And I won't go out of my way to support any Blerd group or whatever group that has no problem disrespecting Black women and goes out of their way to shame Blerds.

Seriously, the FSP actually said that.

There's a quote about fighting "monsters" somewhere....

I would hope that any Blerd group on the come up will look at this debacle and NOT handle conflict like The Fiyastarter Podcast did. And DON'T think foolishness and fuckery like this aren't been seen and noted by others in the Blerd community and will go unnoticed. Or held into account.
